Here's a rundown of what these minerals can do for you...

Potassium

Promotes cell growth, activates certain indispensable enzymes, and regulates body fluids.  Kidney disease, diabetic acidosis, excessive vomiting, diarrhoea or sweating could lead to a potassium deficiency.

Sodium

Indispensable in a diet, sodium regulates the distribution of the body's fluids and the acid/alkaline (pH) balance.  Intake must equal excretion or muscle fatigue/cramps will occur.

Calcium

Essential, not only for  building and maintaining bones and teeth, but for the regulation of the heart beat, blood coagulation, muscle tone and nerve transmission.  A prolonged deficiency can lead to osteoporosis and tetany.

Sulphur

Functions as an antioxidant, and is a constituent of amino acids and makes up the mineral content of cartilage and keratin.  Deficiencies could be found in strict vegetarians, or people suffering from excessive vomiting and diarrhoea.

Phosphate

Basic component of the skeleton, phosphate is also found in the blood and other cells, and is responsible for producing energy in the body.  A lack of this mineral can result in a general sense of feeling unwell.

Chloride

Together with sodium, chloride helps regulate both the pH balance in the body and the effective distribution of body fluids, and plays a major role in digestion.

Magnesium

A mineral essential for activating enzymes, blood coagulation, transporting glucose to the cells and boosting your immune system.  A deficiency could lead to hyperirritability, muscle spasms and cramps, nausea and even personality disorders.  At times of high physical or psychological stress your magnesium requirements are even higher.

Don't bottle it up, tap into water!

by The British Dietetic Association

The pursuit of health, fitness and loveliness is an obsession for most of us. Trouble is, offices are inherently stressful. And the things we do to relax there - such as taking innumerable cups of coffee or tea - may be doing us no good at all. Part of the solution could be pure, healthful, cleansing, revivifying water.

Dr Doyle, of the British Dietetic Association, says: "We need fluids to carry nutrients and oxygen, get rid of waste, lubricate joints and eyes. Only one third of our fluid comes from food. So we need a daily intake of 1.5 to 2 litres of fluid a day. Even mild dehydration can cause problems such as headaches, mood swings and road rage."

"Fluid" doesn't necessarily mean water. But everything else is likely to be laced with sugar, fats, starch, caffeine or dehydrating alcohol.

Of course, we're not talking here about what comes out of the tap - complete with chlorine, fluoride, human body fluids and contraceptive oestrogen. For wholesomeness, beauty and sheer bloody chic, bottled water is the thing.

The labelling of all bottled drinking water is controlled by law. All water - bottled, as much as mains - contains dissolved chemicals of some sort. Some mineral waters arguably have mild digestive qualities. Most work by simply tasting much better than what comes out of the tap.

Bottled waters may be one of three categories: "natural mineral water" (NMW), "spring water", "table water". Each may come in still or sparkling versions - the latter either naturally bubbly or with added carbon dioxide. Each has its own standards.

Natural mineral water: Must come from a specified underground source, be naturally free from harmful bacteria, and must not be treated; only filtered and carbonated. It must have a stable chemical composition and its mineral content must be displayed on the label.

  • Spring water: Must also come from a single specified source, and be bottled on-site. But it can vary in composition, and can be chemically purified.

  • Table water: Must meet the same quality standards as tap water, which may be what it is.
