We shall not forget 11th September Two events in September focused our minds on what was really important in our lives. The first, profoundly upsetting and disturbing, was the horrific terrorist atrocity of 11th September. The other was uplifting - the birth on Jane's first child, a son, a few days later. The juxtaposition of these two events made us think about what we are really doing in SA. Our farm has seen many changes over the last 20 months, and now a birth. If the business we are building succeeds we will be able to change peoples lives for the better in the local area. If we fail then time will erode what we have done and our efforts will be forgotten. If we succeed then permanent employment can be found for scores of people. If we fail that chance will be denied. These two events made us more determined to succeed and to do so quickly. It has been brought home to everyone that there is no guarantee of a long life - death happens, so there is a new urgency to get on with life. Little Jim's birth made us realise that success for our business means value creation and so a chance for children like Jim to grow up in a thriving community. We are not arrogant enough to think that people are relying on us but we can, by succeeding, make our contribution to peoples lives. Success for us will be a business that makes a profit. There is no value at all in charity. In order to make a real contribution the business must create value, turning grapes into wine that is bottled and sold for a profit, so that the business can sustain itself and pay its employees a proper living wage. Success means a better quality of life for our employees and education for them and their children. These two events made us more determined to succeed, not just for ourselves but for the chance success will give to others. Copyright © 2000 Tulbagh Solutions. All rights reserved.
